WHITLEY BAY STATION
Whitley Bay Metro Station, a Grade II listed structure built in 1910, underwent a significant £5.3 million refurbishment to restore its historic character and improve functionality.
The project included the restoration of the station’s iconic canopy, with nearly 1,300 panes of glass replaced and the steel framework strengthened and repainted.
Additional enhancements included the refurbishment of the atrium ceiling with new glazing and lighting, as well as the restoration of two smaller canopies along the station frontage. These upgrades were designed to preserve the architectural heritage of the station while providing an improved and more sheltered experience for passengers.

Meta Environmental provided specialist acoustic consultancy services throughout the project, ensuring that noise levels were carefully managed during construction.
This included conducting baseline noise monitoring, implementing noise control measures, and providing a comprehensive Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment in support of the clients S61 application. The assessment facilitated effective communication with local authorities and ensured compliance with environmental regulations.
Our team worked closely with the project stakeholders to mitigate the acoustic impact on nearby residents and businesses, ensuring that the refurbishment was completed successfully with minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
