STRUCTURAL MONITORING
DCL/56 OLD RIVER CHERWELL UNDERBRIDGE
located at Kings Sutton, Northamptonshire, DCL/56 Old River Cherwell Underbridge is a two-span structure on the Didcot to Chester line, carrying two railway tracks over the Old River Cherwell and a flood relief plane.
The existing bridge comprised of two separate decks of post-tensioned reinforced concrete beams, tied with transverse bars, supported by pre-cast concrete cill units on brickwork substructures.

​The new structure, utilsing Network Rail's Standard Design Type-E double track half-through deck with two steel main I-shaped plate girders and modified all-steel floor was installed, following a new substructure comprising of piles at all four corners of the bridge.​

Meta provided comprehensive vibration and structural monitoring for the DCL/56 Old River Cherwell Underbridge during a four-month piling and civils program, conducted ahead of the bridge deck and rail track replacement.
The Meta team efficiently installed all required monitoring equipment in a single shift before the works commenced, enabling baseline data collection and reporting to support the client’s structural monitoring plan. Critical trigger values were established to alert key stakeholders via text and email in the event of any exceedance.

Using low energy, high-accuracy multi-axis tilt nodes and vibration monitors, Meta delivered real-time, 24/7 data collection and access throughout the project while minimising on track time for personnel and maintenance visits . This allowed the engineering team to closely monitor the structure while ensuring the rail line remained operational during the enabling works, reducing rail passenger disruptions and maintaining the highest safety standards.
