OLD MILVERTON VIADUCT
STRUCTURAL MONITORING
OLD MILVERTON VIADUCT
Originally constructed in 1844 to accommodate a single track, the viaduct was widened in 1882 to add a second line. During the widening, the east (upside) parapet of the original structure was demolished, though the outer spandrel wall of the viaduct is believed to be the original structure.

Renewal works on LSC2/4 viaduct included extensive sheet piling and regrading improvements made to the low mileage embankments and waterproofing of the deck, with Span 1 of the viaduct infilled as part of the enhancements. These modifications ensure effective waterproofing while maintaining structural integrity of the 180 year old rail infrastructure.
These measures addressed structural and operational requirements, ensuring the viaduct's durability and functionality for ongoing rail operations.
META SERVICES
Following a detailed assessment of structural inspections and dilapidation reports, Meta implemented a comprehensive monitoring solution tailored to meet the client’s requirements. This included a multi-sensor node configuration featuring low-energy, high-accuracy multi-axis tilt nodes, vibrating wire crack meters, and vibration monitors strategically installed near planned sheet piling locations.

The Meta team efficiently installed all monitoring equipment in a single shift prior to the commencement of works, facilitating the collection of baseline data and seamless reporting to support the client’s structural monitoring plan. Critical trigger thresholds were established, with automated alerts via text and email to notify key stakeholders of any exceedances.

With real-time, 24/7 data collection powered by low-energy sensors, Meta ensured continuous monitoring while minimising on-site track time for personnel and maintenance. This approach enabled the engineering team to maintain close oversight of the structure, keeping the rail line operational throughout the enabling works. The solution reduced disruptions for rail passengers and upheld the highest safety and efficiency standards.
