WALES METRO
CORE VALLEY LINE OLE PILING
TRANSFORMING THE CORE VALLEY LINES
The Wales Metro Core Valley Line electrification project is a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at modernising rail services across South Wales. This ambitious project involves the electrification of approximately 170 kilometers of rail lines across the valleys, including the Rhondda Cynon Taff, and Merthyr lines. Led by Transport for Wales (TfW), the initiative seeks to significantly enhance connectivity, reduce travel times, and deliver greener, more sustainable transport options. The works include replacing diesel trains with electric or hybrid units, installing overhead electric wires, upgrading tracks and signaling systems, and improving station facilities to meet future demands.
META SERVICES
Meta provides long term remote and attended noise and vibration monitoring solutions, for a wide range of sensitive assets in proximity to the Core Valley Line OLE piling works.

The project requires extensive night and daytime operations, often undertaken as part of 24 hour rolling blockades. The large geographic area and highly mobile nature of the piling teams, offers unique challenges when delivering our noise and vibration monitoring services.
NOISE MONITORING
The unique topography of the Welsh Valleys means works carried out within the rail corridor are often in close proximity to residential and other noise sensitive receptors (NSR). On site and remote monitoring is carried out by Meta, guided by a framework of Meta historical data, BS5228 Part 1 Noise and Section 61 developed by the project team.

Monitoring of sound levels and application of best practicable means (BPM) mitigations, including use of mobile sound barriers, whose use was tested by Meta prior to the commencement of the project, is monitored on an ongoing basis for reporting to the relevant Local Authorities and project stakeholders.
VIBRATION MONITORING
In addition to the residential and sensitive receptors in close proximity, the rail corridor is the location of extensive buried 3rd party assets. Meta is able to support the project engineering team with vibration modelling, analysis and monitoring as part of the consent process for works in the vicinity of these assets.

The local topography requires extensive monitoring of above ground structures including retaining walls, over and under bridges.

Our use of a highly mobile, blended remote and attended monitoring regime, provides the on-site teams with live data and trigger alerts, allowing them to make informed decisions during the installation process.
