TAFFS WELL DEPOT

META SERVICES

Meta provided an extensive suite of consultancy and site based services during the design and construction phases of the project. Our noise and vibration assessment and reporting, provided comprehensive analysis, designed to evaluate and mitigate potential impacts during its operational lifetime

VIBRATION ANALYSIS AND MITIGATION DESIGN

Detailed assessment of vibration sources, including plant, equipment, rail movements, and building structures. The analysis included calculations of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and Vibration Dose Values (VDV) to predict structural and human responses.

EQUIPMENT SPECIFIC MITIGATIONS

Providing equipment-specific vibration management solutions for components like beam cranes, overhead hoists, retractable overhead line equipment (OLE), and roller shutter doors. Each analysis supported by predictive modeling and real-world data comparisons with proposed mitigation measures, such as isolation pads and resilient mounts, evaluated for their effectiveness.

SITE BASED SERVICES

On site monitoring of noise and vibration was provided at key stages of the project including BS4142 surveys and sheet piling operations.

Sensitive assets including rail infrastructure and buried services were assessed, with our consultants on site at the point of installation to offer live trigger level exceedance alerts and damage mitigation guidance.

Meta's fully digital reporting workflow allowed all post installation site reports to be provided to our client, within 24 hours of the works completion.

STRUCTURAL AND HUMAN IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Evaluating cumulative vibration impacts on sensitive office areas and structural elements, ensuring compliance with standards such as BS6472-1:2008 and BS7385-2:1993. Structural elements, including formworks and cladding joints were assessed, ensuring the depot could withstand operational stresses without compromising its integrity.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE

A key consideration was the relationship between vibration and noise. We ensured that both vibration and ground borne noise levels were designed to stay within environmentally acceptable limits. This dual-focus approach supported compliance with regulatory standards and minimised the impact on the building occupants and surrounding community.

THE TAFFS WELL DEPOT

The Taffs Well Depot development is a pivotal element of the South Wales Metro project, serving as the primary operations and maintenance facility for the new fleet of electric tram-trains on the Core Valley Lines. Situated in Taffs Well, just north of Cardiff, the depot is being constructed to accommodate the servicing, stabling, and management of the new fleet of trains that will operate across the newly electrified network. The development includes maintenance buildings, storage sidings, and administrative offices, all designed with sustainability in mind to minimise environmental impact. By centralising operations at Taffs Well, the depot is set to enhance service efficiency, reliability, and frequency, playing a key role in the transformation of public transport across the region.
